BNP protesting Ilias disappearance

Thursday, May 10, 2012 Category : , , 0

The BNP-led 18-party alliance is staging demonstrations in every divisional and district headquarters including capital Dhaka to press home its demands including return of its missing leader M Ilias Ali.

The other demands include withdrawal of the "false cases" filed against top leaders of the alliance, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, unconditional release of the arrested leaders and public security through an end to "abduction, killing and torture."

In Dhaka, the demonstration and rally will be held in front of BNP central office in Nayapaltan around 3:00pm.

The alliance is scheduled to announce next agitation programme from the rally.

On May 6, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed made the announcement at a press conference at the party's central office at Nayapaltan in the capital.

During the briefing, the BNP leader also threatened to go for tougher movement if their demands were not met within this period.

Moudud alleged that panic gripped people due to an increasing number of abductions and killings. "The ongoing agitation will turn into an oust-government movement if it fails to give back Ilias Ali," he said while addressing a rally at Nayapaltan on May 2.

Former lawmaker and BNP Organising Secretary M Ilias Ali went missing around midnight of April 17.

The main opposition claims that the law enforcement agencies had picked him up.

The government, however, refutes the allegation, claiming that it is a drama staged by the BNP.

Protesting Ilias' disappearance, the BNP enforced three consecutive 12-hour shutdowns from April 22 to 24 across the country and the BNP-led 18-party alliance did two dawn-to-dusk hartals on April 29 and 30.

EU pushes for AL-BNP dialogue

Category : , 0

The European Union advocates political dialogue between the ruling coalition and the opposition to purge Bangladesh of what they say 'image crisis' and lure in foreign investment to be a middle-income country.

The observation came amid growing tension between arch-rivals Awami League and BNP after the disappearance of the BNP's organising secretary M Ilias Ali.

The EU delegation in Bangladesh made the observation at a press conference on Wednesday in Dhaka marking the 62nd Europe Day and 40 years of partnership between Bangladesh and the European Union.

"Our role is to encourage and support dialogue. And we believe parliament is the best place for dialogue," ambassador William Hanna, head of delegation, said.
